For a number of years now I’ve been writing Personal Songs for people who follow my music. What this means is that people will hire me to write a song specifically for a person or situation in their life. Sounds amazing, right? Well, it totally is. Read on.

These songs are frequently gifts – frequently for a loved one – frequently a love song. But they can take all kinds of different forms. In the past few years I’ve written songs for marriage proposals, anniversaries, breakups, graduations, cancer recoveries (seriously! SO special), and a whole host of other situations. Everyone’s story is unique.

These songs can take a couple of different shapes, depending on the vision of the person they’re for. There is an intimate ‘acoustic version’ for people who want to keep things simple and stripped-down. For people who want something that sounds bigger, more like something from one of my albums, there is a ‘full production’ option. The streaming players below have some examples of each, so you can see what I’m talking about:

I’ve written a lot of Personal Songs now – nearly 90 at last count. Every time I write one I post about it on Facebook and Twitter, and people started clamoring to hear them. So, we started compiling them onto CDs, of which we’ve released three so far, imaginatively titled Personal Songs Volume 1 (2014), Personal Songs Volume 2 (2016), and Personal Songs Volume 3 (2018). We thought up the names ourselves!

I thought it would be fun to share the songs’ backstories, so you can see where they each come from. Find the stories behind the songs here! I love these songs so much – they’re each a little window into someone’s life. And I LOVE working on these songs with people – the process of getting to know someone on a deep enough level to write a Personal Song for them is something that I’ve come to cherish and look forward to. These projects are always deeply rewarding.
